Who were the Shakers?

Watervliet Shaker Historic District, in Colonie, New York, is the site of the first Shaker community. It was established in 1776 and is listed on the National Reigister of Historic Places. The Shakers were a religious group that came to America in the 1780s. The Shakers, believed that spiritual ties were more significant than blood relationships, organized the community at Watervliet. They practice a celibate and communal utopian lifestyle, pacifism, uniform charismatic worship, and their model of equality of the sexes. They are also known for their simple living, architecture, technological innovation, music, and furniture. The founder of the Shakers, Mother Ann Lee, is buried here

The Shaker Heritage Society focuses on the preservation of the original Shaker settlement in America, located right here in Albany County. Their mission is the betterment of the local community through local history and education.
