Our annual fall fundraiser, BUILT, promotes awareness of our community’s built environment and raises funds for preservation efforts,
and celebrates the talent of local artists.

What is BUILT?

Each year Historic Albany Foundation welcomes the community in celebrating our region’s unique architecture at a 3-day silent auction and art show. We invite everyone to enjoy and bid on up to 200 pieces of architecturally themed art - from paintings to photographs, sculpture to jewelry. Proceeds from this event support our organization’s mission of protecting Albany’s architecture.

PROSPECTUS & RULES FOR BUILT 2024

Event Dates:  November 1 thru 3, 2024
HISTORIC ALBANY FOUNDATION IS SEEKING ORIGINAL ARTWORK INSPIRED BY
THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT OF NEW YORK’S CAPITAL REGION

PLEASE NOTE THIS DEADLINE for 2024 WILL NOT BE EXTENDED.

READ CAREFULLY AS THERE ARE CHANGES TO SUBMISSION RULES.

Art deadline - Friday, September 27, 2024

Following the instructions will help get your work accepted.

SUMMARY

BUILT: Architecture through Artists' Eyes Art Exhibit and Silent Auction will take place from Friday, November 1 through Sunday, November 3, 2024 at the Washington Avenue Armory in Albany.

This year being the 50th anniversary of Historic Albany Foundation, we would love to see more of our lesser-known neighborhoods and buildings represented to create a more interesting and subject matter diverse exhibition.  While we are all familiar with the beauty of the Empire State Plaza, the NYS Capitol and Albany’s City Hall, and Center Square, HAF would love to see fewer landmarks and famous blocks, features and details.  Let’s be creative and see what you’ve got!

A portion of the proceeds from the reception and art sales benefit Historic Albany Foundation's advocacy, education programs and technical services.  Participating artists receive 50% of sold art displayed at the event, while 50% benefits HAF.

BUILT promotes awareness of the Capital Region’s built environment and raises funds for our preservation efforts.  For over 20 years, Historic Albany Foundation has used this annual art exhibit and silent auction to highlight the built environment of the Capital Region.  Over the years, we have extended this artistic lens to highlight not just vacant architecture, but the three major cities’ (Albany, Troy and Schenectady) and their environs into the BUILT environment.

Art in any medium will be considered for entry. However, due to the limitations of the venue and nature of the event, video and performance art cannot be accommodated. Please note that smaller pieces may sell better as it is easier for a buyer to transport them home.

ART SALES

Buyers will purchase pieces online through Historic Albany Foundation. Artists will receive 50% of the proceeds of any sale of their work. The artist gives Historic Albany Foundation exclusive right to sell exhibited work for the duration of the show.  Checks will be sent to artists within 30 days of the completion of the event.  Please ensure that we have your most up to date mailing address for checks.

PRICING ADVICE

Artists set all prices. Please list an Opening Bid Price AND Retail Price for each piece.

1. The Opening Bid Price should correspond to the lowest price you would accept for the work.

2. The Retail Price should be higher than the Opening Bid Price and should be the high end of what you would ordinarily sell your work for.

There are no rules about how high or low the price can be, however artists should be aware that the average price of art sold has been approximately $200 (after bidding).  Works priced higher than $900 have generally not sold as well.

Opening bid prices under $150 are most successful, and we suggest retail prices of at least $125.

DELIVERY

Work MUST be delivered to the event site (The Washington Avenue Armory, 195 Washington Avenue)  by the artist or representative of the artist on Thursday, October 31, 2024 between 9am and 6pm. Historic Albany Foundation reserves the right not to hang work that is not dropped off during set delivery hours. The artist is responsible for insuring work against shipping damage. Historic Albany Foundation is not responsible for any damage during packing, shipping, and/or delivering, under any circumstances. Artists must pick up unsold work by 5pm on Sunday, November 3.

DISPLAY

All accepted work must arrive framed, matted, and/or mounted, in a professional manner, and ready to hang. Sculpture and other unframed art must be accompanied with any necessary staging materials. Framed artwork MUST have a hanging wire on the back to be accepted. For the protection of the work of other artists, no sawtooths, clamps, or protruding screw eyes can be used. Tape wire ends. Historic Albany Foundation assumes total design control of the exhibition. Historic Albany Foundation reserves the right not to hang submitted works which are not appropriately framed, matted, and/or mounted.

If artwork is not ready to hang, a workstation will be provided for THE ARTIST to add wires, hooks, etc. Art will be inspected at time of delivery.  Supplies will be made available at drop off if needed.
