Donate to support the Heritage Marker program

Historic Albany Foundation is pleased to announce its new Heritage Roadside Marker Program.  We all know of many local landmarks and important buildings throughout the city, but there are a lot of lesser known stories of buildings and their occupants that we would like to acknowledge and promote.

This new program looks to highlight an existing building or structure to celebrate and educate the public on its place in Albany's history, drawing attention to a historically significant location could help protect it from neglect for years to come. The markers can also serve as a promotional and programming tool for the future, as well as serving as a catalyst for pride on a lesser known street or neighborhood.

What are the criteria?

~ Honoring an important individual or group that lived or operated at the address.

~ An event of national or local significance occurred at the location.

~ The building or structure itself is significant.

What are our targets?

~ Locations in underrepresented Albany areas or neighborhoods that do not have other prominent historical markers

~ History that is not well known to the average resident: gender, race, LGBTQ, etc.

(While this is an overall goal, it will not be limited to only these identifiers)

Public input

~ Applications from the public will be allowed and encouraged

Public application process

~ Applicant will cite why they believe structure is historically significant

~ Only first-hand sources are allowed to state their case.
