Historic Albany Foundation is proud to partner with the New York State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and Workforce Development at Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) to offer a Historic Trades Certificate Program. This is an ongoing program that offers a variety of different courses throughout the year, including Historic Carpentry, Masonry, and Window Restoration.
This program was developed by the NYS SHPO in response to a high need for skilled, preservation-minded craftsmen across the state.
Upcoming Course - Historic Plastering, March 7- April 15, 2023
This course will provide you with an introduction to the basics of plaster restoration and repair and a working knowledge of basic flat and run plaster skills and practices as they relate to the rehabilitation of historic buildings. Through hands-on labs, lectures and field trips, you will learn about the repair and restoration of walls and ceilings with lime and gypsum plasters with a focus on tool skills and application techniques, proper surface preparation and the business of plastering, as well as how to create knives and support systems for run plaster moldings and medallions. You will also be introduced to the concepts of assessment and structural investigation.
Requirements: Participants must provide their own tools.
Familiarity with basic tools and skills is recommended, but the course is designed for those with little or no plastering experience.
