Notes, lessons, and discoveries: Restoration of a Schaefer-built 1936 Brick Neocolonial Revival home in Old Niskayuna.

  • Common Roots 19 Quackenbush Square Albany NY 122067 United States (map)

Presentation and Q&A led by: Adam Williams

By his early twenties, Paul Schaefer had established himself as a builder of fine homes in and around Schenectady County. Today, more than a hundred Schaefer homes are still standing as fine examples of Dutch Colonial and Georgian Colonial Revival styles popular in the 1930s. This talk will highlight some of the modern design, fine construction, and distinctive elements in evidence at 1608 Lexington Parkway, built by Schaefer for Frederick Law and his family.

Adam Williams is the fourth owner of this home, purchased in 2022. Having spent the past three years restoring many of the house’s nicely preserved elements and salvaging period-correct fixtures, Adam will share detailed interior and exterior photos, mapping efforts to identify area homes built by Paul Schaefer, and some archival context on Niskayuna’s transition from farmland to suburb.
