Basic Bicycle Workshop

  • Historic Albany Foundation 89 Lexington Avenue Albany, NY, 12206 United States (map)

Learn how to do basic bike repair and maintenance. We’ll start with bike setup and some basic checks,  move on to flat repair (the single most common problem), brake adjustment, drivetrain basics, and as time permits, bearings, cables, and other assorted ephemera. Due to time, space, and material constraints, this will be mostly demonstration, I’ll try to work in some hands-on opportunities depending on how many people show up and what folks are interested in. I plan on bringing a couple of bikes to demonstrate on, if you have a specific item on your own bike you’d like to learn about bring it along and we’ll do some one-on-one at the end as time allows.

Meet your Presenter - Gregg Popp
Greg Popp was born in Buffalo, NY, in 1963 and has absolutely zero formal training in bicycle repair. However, he grew up around a machine shop, has been working on bicycles, cars, and motorcycles since childhood, has been volunteering for about 10 years at the Albany Bike Rescue, races MTB and Cyclocross, and commutes by bike year-round from Albany’s Pine Hills neighborhood to Niskayuna. So there’s that.
