Historic Albany Foundation Director of Preservation Services

Job Description

The Director of Preservation Services is responsible for working to preserve and protect Albany’s architectural heritage through Historic Albany Foundation’s (HAF) three major programs – technical assistance, education, and preservation advocacy – under the direction, and reporting to, the Executive Director.   Also contributes to HAF’s publications, website and assists, as needed, with planning and execution of HAF events. 

Technical Assistance
Provides technical preservation consultation to HAF members and the Albany community, including site visits and referrals.  Provides assistance with and consultation on local preservation projects, including assistance with National Register Nominations, grant applications and other economic incentive proposals (tax credit, façade easement). 

Attends all City of Albany Historic Resource Commission evening meetings, to provide technical support for permit applicants when needed.  Attends City meetings and hearings as well as neighborhood association meetings, on an as needed basis.

Also responsible for Project Management by administering St. Joseph’s Church grants and rehabilitation project, including tours and educational programming, as well as the rehabilitation project at Parts Warehouse building, 89 Lexington Avenue and 41 Ten Broeck Street.

Helps to coordinate innovative technical educational programs including workshops, exhibits, presentations, publications, conferences, etc.  Explores and formulates new projects and activities based on community need, board priorities and resources, and potential impact.  <>Supervises plaque program, overseeing quality and accuracy of research and order fulfillment in a timely and professional manner.  Works with other HAF staff to promote the plaque program. 

Responsible for leading the team for the annual Preservation Merit Awards by convening committee, selection of nominees, conducting building research and implementation of program.

Under direction of Executive Director, leads preservation advocacy issues.

Leads the Solutions to Vacant Buildings committee to develop recommendations and take action of prevalent citywide vacant building problem.

Acts as HAF staff representative to all City planning initiatives including South End Action Committee, Arbor Hill Implementation Team, “Operation Block by Block” and others that may arise.

Leads the Preservation Issues Committee to develop and follow through on an action plan for all resources on the Endangered Building List and other preservation priorities.

Keeps abreast of state and national preservation techniques and projects that may facilitate problem solving in Albany.


Qualifications 
Masters Degree in historic preservation, architectural history, or architecture with preservation experience; or can substitute 3-5 years of practical experience in historic preservation. 

Ability to convey to the public the importance of preservation, the interpretation of the local historic ordinances, and the state and national regulations and requirements.  

Highly skilled in the provision of technical services and knowledge to members and the public including site visits; referrals for contractors and specialists; grant writing and National Register nominations; best practices in preservation.  

Exceptional communication skills. 

Familiarity with community development planning practices and the capacity to facilitate technical knowledge to community leaders, government officials, and relevant stakeholders. 

Ability to conduct building research. 

Have knowledge of and provide expertise regarding Albany’s historic built environment. 

Must be available for evening meetings & weekend events in local area.  

Flexibility, ability to prioritize quickly, team player and a good sense of humor a must.

 

Salary
Starting at $33,000, benefits included.
